In 2023, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotelmanagement.net\/operate\/choice-reports-15b-revenues-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">company\u2019s revenue<\/a> grew 10 percent to $1.5 billion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2008, Choice Hotels adopted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.choicehotels.com\/about\/responsibility\/human-rights-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Human Rights Policy<\/a> that \u201ccondemns human trafficking and child exploitation and commits to raising awareness of this issue among the owners and staff of our franchised hotels.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-are-choice-hotels-allegedly-responsible-for-sex-trafficking\"><strong>How are Choice Hotels Allegedly Responsible for Sex Trafficking?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our client says Choice Hotels was aware not only of what was specifically happening to her, but also that sex trafficking was happening in their hotels in general. She says employees and staff at Choice properties observed clear indications of trafficking, including frequent male visitors, excessive requests for towels, loud fighting and throwing of furniture, physical signs of abuse.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police reports, news articles, customer complaints and negative reviews were all available for Choice to review. The hotel chain has faced multiple lawsuits in the past related to sex trafficking at their locations, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/legalnewsline.com\/stories\/628483777-sex-trafficking-victim-sues-wyndham-choice-hotels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decades long claim in Ohio in 2022<\/a> and another suit in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/houston-texas\/houston\/article\/Three-hotel-chains-in-Houston-sued-for-promoting-14942599.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Houston in 2020<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given how well-documented the issue of sex trafficking is, our stance is that Choice should have been generally aware of the practice and taken steps to address it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&gt;&gt; <a href=\"https:\/\/test.kecheslaw.com\/news\/cases\/class-action-against-mass-general-brigham-after-patients-exposed-to-hiv-hepatitis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Keches Law Files Class Action After 450 Patients Exposed to HIV, Hepatitis<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-our-client-s-story\"><strong>Our Client\u2019s Story<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 2016-2018, our client was held by an abuser and moved from location to location, being controlled by her traffickers through alcohol, drugs, and violence. Day after day, she was forced to engage in sex acts with strangers for money, against her will, equating to repeated instances of rape, often more than once per day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She eventually escaped, and she\u2019s spent considerable time trying to move on from her harrowing experience and rebuild her life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-human-trafficking-a-hotel-industry-issue\"><strong>Is Human Trafficking a Hotel Industry Issue?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hotel and motel companies throughout the hospitality industry have made pledges and campaigns that suggest they are combatting trafficking, but limited changes have been implemented.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The complaint filed on behalf of our client alleges that the hospitality industry as a whole, including Choice Hotels, makes millions in profits by not properly addressing the issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also alleges that there is a general failure to create, adopt and enforce policies and procedures to do something about the problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-signs-of-sex-trafficking-at-a-hotel-or-motel\"><strong>Signs of Sex Trafficking at a Hotel or Motel<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hotel and motel rooms are sold on the privacy and potential anonymity they allow for their customers, but this also makes them ideal locations for trafficking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"callout text-xs-left\" style=\"background-color: #f6f6f6; font-size: 18px; color: #245280;\"><h4><strong>Customers<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Department of Homeland Security offers a list of signs for hotel teams to use to recognize potential signs of trafficking including individuals who show signs of:<\/p>\n<li>Sleep Deprivation<\/li>\n<li>Injuries<\/li>\n<li>Malnourishment<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<p>In addition, hospitality workers should look out for individuals without apparent freedom of movement, no control over money or ID and may have inappropriate dress of lower quality clothing compared to the rest of their party.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Rooms<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Hotel workers may notice housekeeping requests such as additional towels or linens but no entry into the room is allowed. Workers may also note extended stays with few or no personal possessions and excessive amounts of sex paraphernalia found in rooms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Food and Beverage<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Employees can look for individuals soliciting male patrons or just loitering in the dining area.
